Self-etching primer is specifically for bare metal. If you sanded through to bare steel anywhere, and you probably did in a few spots, hit those areas with self-etching primer before your regular primer goes over everything. Auto parts stores carry it, usually $8 to $12 a rattle can or about $30 a gallon.

Epoxy primer is the upgrade option. It’s a two-part system with excellent corrosion resistance and adhesion. Pricier at $50 to $80 a gallon, and it has a pot life once mixed so you have to work quickly. But the builders who used it swear they’d never go back.
