Finding free and cheap camping comes down to knowing your options and mixing them up. BLM land and national forests give you free dispersed camping across millions of acres. Walmart and Cracker Barrel lots work in a pinch. Membership programs like Harvest Hosts open up wineries and farms. Casinos, truck stops, and rest areas fill the gaps. The rules are straightforward. Stay in one spot for up to 14 days, then move at least 25 miles. There are usually requirements about distance from water sources and paved roads, and you can’t block gates or access roads. Leave no trace and pack out your trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now here’s the thing for skoolie folks specifically. A lot of the best dispersed camping spots are down narrow dirt roads that a 40-foot bus simply cannot navigate. The deal with Walmart is that Sam Walton was an RV guy, and the company has historically had a policy of allowing overnight RV parking in their lots. It’s not a corporate guarantee though — it’s up to each individual store manager, and local city ordinances can override it completely. Some cities have flat-out banned overnight parking in commercial lots, so even a friendly manager can’t help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s how you do it without being a jerk about it. Go inside first. Find a manager and ask if overnight parking is ok. Park in the back of the lot, away from the entrance. Don’t set up camp — no chairs, no grill, no awning, nothing that makes it look like you’re living there. Buy something while you’re in the store. And leave in the morning. Cracker Barrel has a similar reputation for being RV-friendly, and a lot of bus folks swear by them. The parking lots tend to be set up for larger vehicles since they’re usually right off highway exits. The honest truth about parking lot camping? It’s not romantic. Security lights blazing through your curtains, trucks idling at 4 AM. But sometimes you just need a safe, flat place to crash between real destinations. Harvest Hosts is a membership program — about $99 a year last time I checked — that gives you access to over 5,600 locations across the country. Wineries, breweries, farms, museums, golf courses. You show up, park for the night, and the expectation is that you’ll support the business. Buy a bottle of wine. Grab some produce. It’s not technically free since you’re paying the membership and buying something, but it’s way cheaper than a campground and the locations are incredible. Boondockers Welcome connects you with private property owners willing to let you park on their land. Some are former RVers, some are just people with extra space who like meeting travelers. The reviews are usually detailed so you know what you’re getting into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing I’ll say about both of these — they work really well for buses that look nice. A well-finished conversion with a professional paint job gets a warmer reception than a half-converted yellow school bus. The etiquette is similar to Walmart but a little more relaxed since they’re actively encouraging you to stay. Park in the designated RV area if there is one. Go inside and spend a few bucks even if gambling isn’t your thing — most casinos have cheap restaurants and buffets. I’ve read accounts from bus folks who would park at a casino for two or three nights, eat dinner there each night, and spend less total than one night at a campground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the bigger casino operations in Nevada are basically free RV parks. The Riverside Resort in Laughlin keeps coming up in conversations as one of those spots where the parking lot looks like a miniature RV rally on any given weekend. Not every casino is cool with it, and the scenic factor is basically zero — you’re looking at a flat paved lot next to an interstate. But for a free night with a hot meal nearby, casinos are a solid option that a lot of people overlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest Stops and Truck Stops<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When people ask “where do you go when you travel?” this is usually the most practical day-to-day answer. Rest stops and truck stops are everywhere, they’re designed for large vehicles, and they fill that gap between your planned overnight spots when plans change or you just can’t drive anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest stops along the interstate are free and usually allow overnight stays, but the rules vary by state. Some states post signs saying you can stay a maximum of 8 hours. Truck stops are a different animal entirely. Pilot, Flying J, Love’s, TA — these are basically small cities with fuel, food, showers, laundry, and massive parking lots designed for 18-wheelers. I will say this though. Truck stop parking lots are loud. Refrigerated trailers running their reefer units all night, trucks idling, air brakes hissing at 3 AM. If you’re a light sleeper, invest in earplugs. But if you can handle the noise, truck stops are one of the most reliable overnight options for a bus because you never have to worry about whether your vehicle fits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The showers are surprisingly nice too. Most big chains have private rooms cleaned between every use, $12-15 or sometimes free with a fuel purchase. For people boondocking for days at a stretch, knowing where the truck stops are along your route is basically a survival skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ok, so all the options above are great, but I’d be leaving out arguably the most important one if I didn’t talk about people. The skoolie community is tight. Like, really tight. And once you’re part of it, doors start opening that you didn’t know existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond personal connections, there’s the broader community. Skoolie rallies happen all over the country, and they’re not just social events — they’re networking. You meet someone at a rally in Arkansas, and six months later they’re texting you saying they found a great spot in Colorado and there’s room for one more bus. Work exchanges are worth mentioning too. WWOOF, Workaway, and similar networks connect travelers with property owners who will let you park in exchange for a few hours of work per day. AllStays<\/strong> is a paid app (around $10 one-time) that maps out Walmarts allowing overnight parking, rest areas, truck stops, dump stations, and water fill-up points. A lot of long-term travelers consider it essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there’s Google Maps satellite view<\/strong>, which might be the most underrated tool of all. When I was researching boondocking spots, I noticed people in the forums constantly recommending you check satellite imagery before committing to a spot. You can see road conditions, how much space is available, and whether the access road looks like something your bus can handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing I’ll add — don’t just rely on apps. Join the Facebook groups and the subreddits. The best spots aren’t always in the apps because people don’t want them blown up and overcrowded. You don’t need every night planned for the next six months. You need a general direction, a couple apps on your phone, and the understanding that not every night is going to be a scenic overlook in the mountains. Some nights are a Walmart parking lot. Some nights are BLM land with a sunset that makes you forget every hard thing about this lifestyle. Both are part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The combination that works for most people is boondocking on public land when they’re out west, the occasional RV park when they need hookups, truck stops for transit nights, and community connections for everything in between. Nobody uses just one of these. You mix and match based on where you are and what your budget looks like that month.
